alchemy

The Summerhouse Gallery is delighted to introduce Alchemy, a brand-new show featuring paintings by Sophie Capron and ceramics by Jake Boex. Alchemy shows two different creative practices, both of which touch on themes of transformation. A short film made by Jake, commissioned by the gallery, delving into both artists’ creative process and their response to Alchemy, will be shown at the gallery for the duration of the show. You will find the film and full collection of works below.

Join us in celebrating the opening of Alchemy, on Friday July 26th from 6-8pm. Everyone is welcome!

Alchemy runs from July 26th- August 11th

sophie capron

Sophie Capron is an abstract painter who works from her studio in Truro. Conscious of the environment, Sophie works only with paint which has been donated to her from members of the community. These paints are often left over from various home DIY projects, meaning she doesn’t have control over the type of paint or the colours that she works with. This restriction is one of the reasons Sophie’s work is so captivating, no two pieces are the same and the collections of work she produces (although aesthetically distinctive in style) take on different energies, depending on the paints she has been given at that time.

jake boex

Jake Boex has been with The Summerhouse for many years. His wheel-thrown, functional pieces are best-known for their perfectly symmetrical forms, flawless glazes and occasional hand-stamped poetic words. Their symmetry and seamlessness is often offset by small hand finished touches which remind us of the maker behind the ceramics and the journey that the piece has been on to exist within the gallery space and then within the home.
