BODY OF WATER

The peninsula of Cornwall is surrounded on three sides by the ocean; the Celtic Sea and the English Channel respectively, a position that creates a light and a feeling that has attracted artists and creators for centuries, working to replicate that ethereal energy generated by the meeting of land and sea in their own way. The water is such a huge part of existence here, even if you have less desire to capture it on a canvas but rather a need to immerse yourself amongst it, seeking respite from the constrictions of a landlocked way of living.

Body of Water is our very own celebration of the sea; a collection of work that captures the feelings of peace, rejuvenation, exhilaration and awe that a life by the ocean is synonymous with and showcasing our artists whose creative journey has also been shaped in this way, by the very water which inspires it.

Through a variety of avenues of style and artistic expression, we hope to have captured that very same outlook through this show. The Summerhouse is a gallery whose waterside location holds a huge part of our identity and brings us a huge amount of joy. We hope to share that with you here through the work of this talented collective of artists.

Our private view will be held on the 24th of May 6-8pm, with the show running through to the 9th of June.

Kit johns

Featuring Kit Johns, one of The Summerhouse’s most prolific wave makers; his seascape and coastline studies heavily feature the deep dark ultramarines of tempestuous waves or the green-y aqua hues of those balmy, hazy Cornish millpond afternoons. Kit creates his work from his studio on The Lizard Peninsula, surrounded like Cornwall itself on all sides by his muse. His dynamic and dramatic depictions of our coastline and waters in its many guises has led to him becoming one of Cornwall’s most recognisable seascape artists.

Nicky Stone

Nicky Stone provides a ceramic medium with her porcelain clay figures. Her work holds a crisp bone like unglazed finish, accentuated by mark making and textures which develop during the firing process. Inspired by archetypal imagery, the myth and magic of being human and speaking to the connection we hold with the earth, sea and stars. A beautiful homage to the ever-present rush felt when a land dweller immerses themselves into the ocean, the magic of that moment will never fade no matter how many times one dives in.

Sophie elizabeth moore

We are also so excited to introduce Sophie Elizabeth Moore to the gallery this Summer with a diverse and beautiful range of relaxed portraiture that defines her style. Painted onto both paper and wood, Sophie's swimmers are a true ode to the joy of water immersion, as well as a nod to the importance of fun and quirky swimwear.

jill hudson

Jill Hudson uses her art to explore the landscape of life in all its forms, with a focus on its fleetingness, its loneliness, its poetry and its reality. Feelings and perspectives that are only ever amplified when stood facing the ocean. Jill’s work holds a real focus on a combination of texture and colour to draw the viewers eye, as if stood watching the water; wild cloudscapes over choppy seas, framed with the multitude of plant life and rocky cliff faces that make up the Cornish coastline.
